Document Summary

Middle of the 15th century the portuguese raided he coast of africa in their attempt to find a sea route to south asia for spices trades. When raids became less successful, the portuguese traded with african people for gold, spices, and more slaves. Their knights made military and holy promises to god and their kingdoms but they were broken as they barbarically raided the island and mistreated its people into slavery. The conflicts between the spanish and the portuguese lead to the lack of resources in their native lands and they thought the only resolution was to import slaves from africa. Religious instruction of slaves to make them catholics. British americans were afraid that making africans catholic would blur the cultural and social distinctions that the effective system of slavery required. Revivalism allowed for african americans to license black men to preach in separate black churches. Gradual abolition of slavery made it more possible for black congregations.
