Document Summary

Gender inequality: males and females unequal access to power, property and prestige on the basis of sex. Sex: the biological characteristics that distinguish males and females. Primary sex characteristics: the vagina and penis and other organs related to reproduction. Secondary sex characteristics: physical distinctions between males and females that are not directly connected with reproduction. For example, a male will get a lower voice and facial hair while a female will form more fatty tissue like breasts. It varies from one society to another because it is what a group considers proper for its males and females. Sex refers to male or female and gender refers to masculinity and femininity. You inherit your sex and learn your gender. The sociological significance of gender is that it is a device by which society controls its members. Generally, sociologists take the nurture side on the nature vs nurture debate about gender and sex.
