WS100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Sexualization, Internet Pornography, Light Skin
Document Summary
Language reflects the values of the dominant culture-is thus one way in which stereotypes are communicated and reproduced. It"s common now to address women as ms. instead of miss or mrs (which exaggerate the importance of a woman"s marital status) Women adopting their husbands" last names reflects old idea that women are property. Certain terms (i. e. , chicks, gals, babes, hotties) demean women-associate them with animals, little girls, etc. Women who are good friends can refer to one another as girl or girlfriend and it may be affirming, not demeaning. If a man refers to his assistant as girl , it trivializes her status and reaffirms the power relationship between them. In a variety of settings (i. e. , classrooms meetings) men talk more than women. Men are more likely to interrupt women, women are more likely to use hesitancy in speaking. Women more lithely to use uptalk (speaking in statements that have the tone of questions)
