ADMS 2511 Chapter 10 Notes – Summary
Introduction
Fiedler Contingency Model
• The Fiedle otige odel, Hese ad Blahad’s Situatioal Leadeship ®, ad
path-goal theory.
• The first comprehensive contingency model for leadership was developed by Fred
Fiedler.
• The Fiedler contingency model proposes that effective group performance depends on
the pope ath etee the leade’s stle ad the degee to hih the situatio gives
the leader control.
• Fiedler created the least preferred co-worker (LPC) questionnaire to determine whether
individuals were primarily interested in good personal relations with co-workers
• And thus relationship-oriented, or primarily interested in productivity, and thus task-
oriented.
• Fiedle assued that a idiidual’s leadeship stle is fied.
• Therefore, if a situation requires a task-oriented leader and the person in that
leadership position is relationship oriented
• Either the situation has to be modified
• The leader must be removed and replaced for optimum effectiveness to be achieved.
• Afte assessig a idiidual’s asi leadeship stle though a LPC uestioaie, the
next step is to match the leader with the situation.
• Fiedler identified three contingency dimensions that determine the situation a leader
faces.
• That situatio ill the affet the leade’s effetieess
• Leader–member relations.
• The degree of confidence, trust, and respect members have for their leader.
• Task structure.
