Founders of christianity cannon- comes from greek word for rule; the authoritative way of measuring something. Cannon law, law of the church textual criticism: alert to potential errors, the accuracy of the authors, copying & recopying of texts, different sources or versions of stories. Why look for these things? trying to ensure there is no falsification of information being given, which manuscript is on the right track, facts are correct, etc. Trying to keep the manuscripts consistent/reconstruct the document so there are no corruptions. Scribes try to get as close to a hypothetical original manuscript as they can. New testament is a reconstruction, only have copies, the text critic figures out which manuscript is most likely closest to the original. Only interested in trying to reconstruct what is most likely closest to the original of the document or thing they are studying.
