Document Summary

The ballad of barbara allen ends in what would be a tragic love story, if not for the fact that both characters within the ballad are joined together, finally, at the very end. Sir john dies soon after, pleading with barbara before o it"s i"m sick, and very, very sick, and it"s a" for. Barbara allen, leaving barbara alone with her feelings of grief and sorrow over sir john"s unrequited love. Barbara then returns to her home, asking her mother to make her bed saft and narrow, by which she means make her a long and narrow grave, and dies soon after, out of love for sir john. This would be tragic, if not for the soul fact that both barbara and sir john end up reunited together in love, through death. This brings to light, then, the short appearance of the theme of irony, towards the end of the ballad.
