All organisms made of one or more cells. Cell is basic structural and functional unit of all living things. Cells arise only from pre-existing cells (through division) 2. 1 basic features of cell structure and function. Cells use chemical molecules or light for energy, respond to changes in external area by internal reactions, duplicate, pass hereditary info. Life as we know it doesn"t not exist in smaller units than cells. 2. 1a cells are small and can only be seen using microscope. Bacteria and archaea are not evolutionarily related and therefore are not under the name prokaryotes anymore. All three domains of life are organized according to the same basic plan, have structures that preform similar activities. Microscopy: technique for producing visible image of things too small to see with eye. Instrument used is microscope (i. e. light and electron microscopes) Electron microscope: illuminates the electrons in the specimen.
