Document Summary

Cell theory- a) all organisms are composed of one or more cells, b) cell is the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms, and c) arise only from the division of pre-existing cells. Microscopy- a technique for producing visual images of object that are too small to be seen by the human eye. Resolution- the minimum distance by which two points in the specimen can be separated and seen at two points (electron microscopes have higher resolution) Plasma membrane- all cells bounded by it, bilayer made of lipids with embedded protein molecules, hydrophobic barrier, substances go through transport protein channels (ions and water) Genes- the more central part of the cells which contains hereditary information, segments of dna that code for proteins. Cytoplasm- all parts of the cell between plasma membrane and central region (made up to cytosol, organelles and cytoskeleton) Organelles- small, organized structures used for cell function. Cytosol- aqueous solution containing ions and organic molecules.
