Document Summary

Periodic table originally came from observations that when elements are arranged by atomic mass, properties occur periodically (mendeleev) Metals have the properties: good conductors of heat & electricity, malleable & ductile, heat melting points. Non-metals have the properties: poor conductors of heat & electricity, brittle, low melting points (some are even gases at room temperatures) Non-metals: to right of periodic table. In between metals & non-metals, have some properties of metals & non-metals. Noble gases: all have full valence shell, this gives extreme stability & chemical inertness. It appears most elements try to archive stability by acquiring or losing electrons. These have 1 or 2 electrons more than noble gases: they can lose these electrons (through rxn) to produce stable ions, aluminum (group 13) will actual lose 3 electrons to achieve the stable ion. These have 1 or 2 electrons less than noble gas: they can gain these electrons to produce stable ions.
