It seemed impossible to me, but i know i was right, in judging what i had seen. I had never before experienced a state of shock, been in a state of shock. Even when i found out my mother had fled russia, leaving my father and i behind, i think i experienced more a sense of denial, then acceptance, rather than shock or awe. I don"t think i"ve ever been surprised by much in life, but i sure was now. I"d hate to admit that what i saw was real, let alone the idea of it being henry, the sweet, gentle-natured man. I haven"t tried to justify anything, or to come up with some solid explanation as to why henry would be cutting off dead people"s hands. Maybe he really was as shell-shocked and messed up from the war as mark had claimed him to be. Maybe something like that can drive a person to the edge.
