Designed to protect public from future crimes by: General deterrence: discouraging potential offenders from crime. Specific deterrence: by discouraging offenders from doing it again. Rehabilitation: by curing offender of what made him do it. Incapacitation: by keeping offender in jail to protect society. Key = proportionality sentence given should be proportionate to the gravity of offence and person"s degree of responsibility. Denunciation: expressing society"s disapproval of offender behaviour. Retribution: making offender pay for his crime eye for an eye. Ex. victim offender reconciliation, sentencing circle, family group conferencing. Concurrent sentences received will be merged together into 1 and served simultaneously. Consecutive served in sequence one begins after the other ended. Intermittent served part time + no more than 90 days long.
