Mentuhotep ii"s defeat of the rival 10th dynasty of herakleopolis started a new period of unification in egyptian history, which was to last for nearly 400 years. We can point to the pyramids of the old kingdom"s defining characteristic and at the. It was a period of transformation empire for the new kingdom; no comparable single feature describes the middle kingdom. The egyptians of the middle kingdom established a number of practices that were fundamental for subsequent periods. Throughout history, ancient egyptians regarded literary compositions of the middle. Also in administrative practices and foreign policy the egyptians of the middle kingdom laid the basis for later times. The period represents the completion of processes that had started many centuries before, while the era"s accomplishments inspired egyptians for more than 1500 years. From several kings of the period survive a large number of statues representing them as humans or human-headed sphinxes and inscribed with their names.
