Chapter one from the textbook staying alive summarizes the epidemiological approach to health and its determinants in specified populations. It differentiates between the terms health and health care by defining health as not merely the absence of disease and illness, but complete mental, physical and social well being. This chapter discusses some factors such as income differences between the rich and the poor that lead to inequality in american and canadian societies. Prior to reading this piece, i was unaware of ways societies can improve conditions in early life that can naturally develop in later years of adulthood. After understanding this chapter, i now think that it is so fascinating how important healthy conditions are required during pregnancy, as it can prevent chronic diseases in adult life. Countries such as canada that have a paid maternity/paternity leave law have better health outcomes than u. s. for example.
