HLST 1010 Chapter 13: Chapter 13
Document Summary
Women and men use healthcare diferently and are treated diferently once inside the system. Majority of providers are also women, but only a minority are in positions of power. Gender movement in canada has promoted a lot of gender-sensitive research on women. Similarly 80% of unpaid care takers at home are women. Women rate of hospitalization is still 20% higher than men this is especially true in the 15-40year old range. All of this made it important for research to focus on women when it comes to healthcare needs. What works for men does not necessarily work for women and vice versa. Healthcare research and policies that originally only took into account men"s had to be reformed. 1995 canada adopted a federal plan for gender equality. All legislation and policy must include a study of the potential for diferent impacts on women. Established women"s health bureau in health canada.
