Maslow"s hierarchy of needs: proposed people want to satisfy various needs that can be arranged. Chapter 4: motivating people in a hierarchy of importance. Top down: self-actualization needs, esteem needs, belongingness needs, security needs, physiological needs. Ex: bottom up: food, stability, friendship, status, achievement; base salary, pension plan, friends at work, job title, challenging job. Summary: hc managers can motivate people by determining what needs and rewards they view as most important. Can be accomplished through formal and informal means of communication: rewards may be both economic and noneconomic. Should be relevant to the priority needs of particular employees or employer groups: goals should be set at the time of hiring and at periodic performance evaluations.
