Case studies: the street as a site of supervision. Street through socially constructed occurs as the effect produced by the operations that orient it, situate it, temporalize it, and make it function. Lefebvre suggests that just as everyday life has been colonised by capitalism, so has its location- social space. Space has been socially constructed and used to ensure the survival of capitalism. Difference between our conception of space- abstract, mental and geometric- and our perception of space- concrete, material and physical. Street activates class divisions through class based codes of conduct, relocating that which has occupied the margins to the center and decentring and de- essentializing the subject. Today, street highlights the liberal ethos of individualism, a condition and consequence of commodity exchanges as idealized and practised among street merchants or vendors. Culture mediates, provides rationality and articulates a language that magically define conformity by imposing a familiar context and generates universal commitment.
