Cautions, Questions and Opportunities in Sport for Development and Peace by Bruce Kidd
Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) has become a recognized strategy of social
intervention in disadvantaged communities throughout the world
The most visible NGOs (non-government organization) such as Right To Play (TRP) are
supported by international corporations as form of corporate social responsibility
There is a tremendous diversity of purposes, methodologies, actual activities, levels of
intervention and social contexts associated with SDP
The most respected programs adhere to the accepted “best practices” of development:
they are community-planned, needs and assets-based initiatives, with close links to
other programs/interventions (especially in education and health)
The act of providing “sport for sport’s sake” to the disadvantages is no mean
contribution
Survey research suggests that in most countries only a small amount of children are
enjoying the benefits of sports
oThe children form the higher income groups enjoy significantly more benefits
than children from lower income groups
oIn many countries, sport participation may actually be falling
In any mapping of SDP, it would be helpful to show the available data on the actual
country-by-country and region-by-region participation
SDP might always get the result that people want. The quality of programs and their
links to other interventions are important
oParticipants must feel that the programs meet their needs and that have been
consulted in their design and delivery (they must feel that it’s their program)
oParticipants must have access, including equipment an transportation, to the
programs. Programs should be clean, affordable, and enjoyable and participants
must be safe and socially comfortable
oBenefits of sport participation and sport initiatives cant be understood in
isolation from other social and material conditions. To be successful, programs
should be linked to other interventions
oPrograms must have a lasting impact
oPublications about SDP must be open to public
If SDP is to grow and succeed, its advocates and practitioners need to stay away from
the false claims of the international documents and monitoring and Evaluation (M&E)
and to develop their own community-appropriate measures to evaluate what is actually
happening on the ground
We need to know more about whether and what aspects of sport and physical activity
actually produce or contribute to certain outcomes from the M&E
Evidence to data is that, apart from the obvious physiological benefits, successful results
are dependent to context than of any particular aspect of sport and physical activity
The special issue is that SDP programs need to be linked to other interventions such as
education, health and employment
