Abstract
How media and institution of sport create and reproduce ideals about masculinity and
reinforcing homophobic attitudes toward gender roles in sports.
How Canadians make use of the concept of “Muscular Christianity” to explain Hegemonic
Masculinity.
Intro
Institution of sport is heterosexist (favouring heterosexual). By:
Reproducing and rewarding hegemonic masculinity.
Normalizing homophobic behaviors.
Focusing on the homophobic nature of Institution rather than a specific sport.
There are NO visible differences between gay and straight.
Gays are framed with a certain “homosexual behaviours”.
They are portrayed by the media as “not serious about sport”, and they just “look to have
sex with their teammates”.
Richard Bonomo: people don’t picture gay people as athletes but as some guy wearing a wig,
skirt.
Gay athletes remain closeted because homosexuality is NOT accepted by the mainstream
media.
Muscular Chrisitanity remains dominant masculinity identity in Canada.
The idea in the media: athleticism = masculinity = heterosexuality.
Hegemonic Masculinity in Sporting Canada
Heteronormative: assuming individuals are either masculine males that sexually desire women
or feminine females that sexually desire men.
Heterosexism: thinking that heterosexuality is natural.
Minority sexualities are repressed.
