There are 3 main type of muscle: cardiac muscle: They are striated (striped) muscles that are electrically coupled cells, which allows electrical impulses to travel between muscle fibers. The cardiac muscle is controlled by the autonomous system; not voluntarily: smooth muscle: It is responsible for blood vessel tone (vasoconstriction and vasodilation) This muscle surrounds the blood vessel and controls blood vessel size: skeletal muscle: weight. Amount to 600 muscles, making 40-50% of a normal person"s body. Striated but not electrically coupled like the cardiac muscles. Muscle is composed of a number of fasciculi (singular: fascicle) Within each fascicle, there are bundles of individual muscle fibers (cells) The muscle fibers are in turn composed of many myofibrils (contraction units) The number of fibers or cells varies between muscles and is related to the size of the muscle.
