KINE 2049 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Scientific Method, Natural Science, Pseudoscience
Document Summary
Can be further classified into physical sciences, earth sciences, life sciences and others. Very precise, accurate, deterministic and independent of the person making the scientific observations. Example: measure a perso(cid:374)"s happi(cid:374)ess usi(cid:374)g a h(cid:455)potheti(cid:272)al i(cid:374)stru(cid:373)e(cid:374)t, may find that same person is happier or less happy on different days and times. Features of science: 3 fundamental features in the general scientific approach: Systematic empiricism: learning based on observations and careful planning. Empirical questions: questions about the way the world actually is and therefore can be answered by systematically observing it. Involves continually moving back and forth between theory and observations. Includes a variety of research approaches, tools and techniques (qualitative and quantitative data, stats, experiments, surveys) Types of scientific research: three types of scientific research projects, exploratory: new areas of inquiry, where goals of the research are to scope out the extent of a particular phenomenon, problem or behaviour.
