Document Summary

Inputs to medial and superior nuclei are from semicircular canals. Outputs to medial nucleus are to medial vestibulospinal tract ( mvst ), with connections to spinal cord controlling neck muscles. Medial vestibulospinal tract plays role in coordinating interactions bw head and eye movements. Neurons from medial and superior nuclei ascend to motor nuclei of eye muscles and help in stabilizing gaze during head motions. Vestibular system to oculomotor complex is responsible for vestibule-ocular reflex- rotates eye opposite to head movement allowing gaze to remain steady even when image or head is moving. Vestibular nystagmus is rapid alternating movements of eyes in response to continued rotation of the body. When nystagmus occurs without movement of head this is indication of dysfunction in peripheral or central nervous system. Postrotatory nystagmus is reversal in direction of nystagmus, occurs when person is spinning and stops suddenly. Postrotatory nystagmus used to evaluate function of vestibular system. Vestibular has both a static and dynamic component.
