In this lesson, we will look at three outdoor music festivals: the 1967 monterey international. Pop festival, the 1969 woodstock music and art fair, and the altamont speedway free festival, also held in 1969. Together, these three events capture some of the best and worst aspects of the music and culture of the late 1960s. People united to celebrate music, free love, psychedelia, higher levels of consciousness, and anti-establishment values. At the same time, poor organization of these events often led to chaos and even unnecessary tragedy. Inspired by the success of the human be-in that was held in san francisco in january of 1967, some rock entrepreneurs were inspired to create a music festival. Lou adler and by john phillips of the mamas and the papas, they sought to develop a music festival that would celebrate rock music. Festival, which was held in june of 1967.
