Noises = sounds we have learned to ignore. Collected best painters and architects of the time. Bauhaus: brought aesthetics to machinery and mass production. Acoustic design: inter-discipline where musicians, acousticians, psychologists, sociologists study world soundscape in order to make suggestions for improvement. How do they do this: document important features, note differences, parallels/trends, collect sounds threatened w/ extinction, study effects of new sounds before they are released into the environment, study human behavior patterns in different environments. Today, anything can be classified as sound. Expansion of percussion instruments that produce non-pitched and arrhythmic sounds. Greek myths regarding sounds: was said that the lyre was invented by hermes. Dionysian myth, music comes from within the humans. Ancient chinese source regarding music: music of well ordered age is calm and cheerful (cid:449)here (cid:449)as (cid:373)usi(cid:272) of (cid:862)resti(cid:448)e(cid:863) age is e(cid:454)(cid:272)ited a(cid:374)d fier(cid:272)e. Music of decaying state is sentimental and sad.
