Human body = system of individuals cells that work together. Eating = provide basic chemical + energy needs of the cells. Through this system that food is processed and broken down so that its constituent parts can be packaged and sent to the appropriate cells in the body. Metabolism = flow of energy into, through and out of the body. Measured through calorie -- defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gramme of water from 16 degrees c to 17 degrees c. What we count in food is the kilocalorie. Male - 3000 calories; females - 2200. A kilogramme of body fat is about 7000 calories. Food needs to be ingested - for nutrients and energy to be extracted, we need to break it down. Break it down with our teeth (unless in liquid form) Canine teeth - pointed; cut or tear food.
