Bad food can have long-term or immediate effects. Some foods that can cause immediate distress o death toxins, and water-borne disease foods that become infected by an external agent - fungal, bacterial, parasites. Natural food better than processed food - irony. Many foods in their natural state - toxins; these are endogenous toxins -- toxic chemicals that are part of the organism itself. Ex. potato, eggplant, tomato- leaves of these plants are poisonous. The toxin is solanine; the green part of the potato. Solanine - glycoalkaloids - in the body it inhibits the enzyme essential for transmitting nerve impulses. Death is possible; but commonly the result is vomiting and abdominal pain. Other alkaloids in our beverages - caffeine, theobromine. They have toxic effects, but are very small. Combines w/ other elements to form salts which can irritate the mouth and intestine - cause kidney stones. Some plants have toxins that can only be removed by special preparation or cooking.
