Chapter 1. 1 the possibility of life beyond earth. Scientists are interested in aliens too, although most scientists remain deeply skeptical about reports of aliens on earth. When we search for extraterrestrial life, or life beyond earth, we are looking for any sign of life, be it simple, complex, or intelligent. The scienti c search for life in the universe is a relatively recent development in human history, but the idea of extraterrestrial life is not. Many ancient cultures told stories about beings living among the stars and, the ancient greeks engaged in serious philosophical debate about the possibility of life beyond earth. Second, while we"ve long known that the universe is full of stars, we"ve only recently gained concrete evidence telling us that it is also full of planets, which means there are far more places where we could potentially search for life.
