Document Summary
Management: a process that involves directing activities within an organization. Managers carry formal authority over the work of others in that organization. Management is focused on orderly steps and coordination of details to implement a plan. Leadership: a process that involves influencing the thinking and actions of others with respect to achieving a goal leader"s do not have to have the formal authority of a management position. Great man theories were based on the study of famous or historic leaders to identify qualities and personal traits that could characterize leaders, but provided little definitive knowledge about leadership. There seems to be no universal and enduring sets of qualities or traits we can attribute to leaders. Whether a behaviour is perceived as that of a leader will vary with the historical and cultural context. Researchers abandoned the trait approach, it did little to predict who would turn out to be a leader.
