Significance of research and evidence-informed practice in the field of nursing. There are (4) fundamental patterns of knowing in nursing: empirical knowledge the science of nursing. Research: systematic, rigorous, logical investigation that aims to answer questions about nursing phenomena. There are (2) types of research: quantitative, qualitative. Phenomena: occurrences, circumstances, or facts that are perceivable by the senses. Phenomena, such as the expression of pain or loss, are the circumstances of interest to nurses. Evidence-based nursing: the incorporation of evidence from research, clinical expertise, client preferences and other available resources to make decisions about clients. Much of the evidence used as a basis for practice is from research that has been completed, written about in papers, and then published. Published research studies are assessed so that decisions about application to clinical practice can be made, which results in practice that is evidence based. Stemmed from dr. archie cochrane"s investigation of the efficacy of health care in the medical profession.
