Text: Essential Readings in World Politics Article: Balance of Power Author: Morgenthau  Balance of power (bop) is sought after and must operate under particular principles in a society of sovereign nations  Misconception: there is a choice between power politics and other ways of “better” IR  Bop is a universal concept; tendency for the equilibrium to be re-established after possible disturbances o Two elements of the items in the equilibrium  1. They deserve to exist  2. Without equilibrium, one may destroy the others  Different methods of establishing/maintaining bop o Divide and rule  Example: Soviet Union opposed the creation of the European “Western bloc” because then their enemies would bind together and threaten them o Compensations  Example: France/Germany/Br
