The balance of power is an inevitable and obvious part of ir. The approaches to it and the tools by which it is implemented vary, but nevertheless, they are ever-present. Balance of power (bop) is sought after and must operate under particular principles in a society of sovereign nations. Misconception: there is a choice between power politics and other ways of better ir. Bop is a universal concept; tendency for the equilibrium to be re-established after possible disturbances. Two elements of the items in the equilibrium: they deserve to exist, without equilibrium, one may destroy the others. Different methods of establishing/maintaining bop: divide and rule. Example: soviet union opposed the creation of the european western bloc because then their enemies would bind together and threaten them. Compensations are at the root of diplomatic negotiations: armaments. The principles by which the nation seeks to establish or re-establish the bop. Most often constitutes military force/power: alliances.
