Document Summary
An animal"s capacity for conditioning is constrained by its biology. Each species" predispositions prepare it to learn the associations that enhance its survival. Genetic predisposition to associate a cs (red) with a us (sex) Rats are given food before becoming nauseous with radiation, several hours later they do not touch the food (goes against pavlov"s us must immediately follow cs) Biological constraints predispose organisms to learn associations that are naturally adaptive. A hamster will not play the piano for food (playing piano = not biological) However, a hamster will dig for food (rolling over in mud = biological) rolling over is a natural food-searching behavior. Pavlov & watson underestimated the importance of not only biological constraints, but also cognitive processes (thoughts, expectations, perceptions) Animals learn predictability & expectancy of how likely us will occur. Conditioned liked & dislikes (like characters you eat ice-cream to better than those you eat brussel sprouts to)
