Document Summary

Wilhelm wundt created an experiment and machine that measured the time lag between people"s hearing a ball hit a platform and their pressing a telegraph key. People responded in about 1/10 of a second. People responded in 2/10 of a second when asked to press key as soon as they were consciously aware of perceiving the sound. (to be aware of ones awareness take a little bit longer) Wundt"s student edward bradford aimed to discover the minds structure. He engaged people in self reflective introspection ( looking inward) Training the people to report elements of their experience as they looked at a rose, listened to a metronome, smelled a scent or tasted a substance. Introspection proved unreliable, it required smart, verbal people, and its result varied from person to person. Structuralism: used introspection to define the mind"s makeup. Functionalism: focused on how mental processes enable us to adapt, survive, and flourish.
