Some believe medical diagnoses of abnormal behaviour put potentially derogatory labels on people. Psychotic, schizophrenic and mentally ill carry a social stigma. Many psychological disorders are partly related to genetic and biological factors, making it a physical illness and has less of a stigma. Thomas szasz: abnormal behaviour is a deviation from social norms rather than an illness. Deviations are problems in living rather than medical problems. Prognosis: a forecast about the probably course of an illness. When making a diagnosis, there is criteria: Deviance: when people violate social and cultural norms they may be labeled as mentally ill. Maladaptive behaviour: when a person"s everyday adaptive behaviour is impaired, they have a psychological disorder. Personal distress: individual reports great personal distress.
