Document Summary

The course of prenatal development: germinal stage. First phase of prenatal development, encompassing the first two weeks after conception. Begins when a zygote is created through fertilization. Within 36 hours, rapid cell division begins and the zygote multiplies. The mass of cells migrates along the mother"s fallopian tube to the uterine cavity. About the 7th day, the cell mass implants itself in the uterine wall. Placenta: structure that allows oxygen and nutrients to pass into the fetus from the mother"s bloodstream and bodily wastes to pass out to the mother: embryonic stage. Second stage of the prenatal development, lasting from two weeks until the end of the second month. Most of the vital organs and bodily systems begin to form in the developing organism, which is the embryo. Period of great vulnerability because of all the basic physiological structures are being formed: fetal stage. Third stage of the prenatal development, lasting from two months through birth.
