Document Summary
Chapter 1: how psychology developed: a new science is born, psychology has its origins in philosophy and physiology. It comes from the greek words psyche meaning mind and logos referring to the study of a subject: wilhelm wundt, a german professor, mounted a campaign to make psychology its own independent scientific discipline. In 1897, wundt established the first laboratory for psychological research in leipzig. Soon after in 1881, he established the first research journal in psychology: according to him, psychology was the study of consciousness the awareness of immediate experience. James argued that consciousness was a continuous flow of thoughts. By breaking it down into its basic parts, structuralists were analyzing static points in the flow. Instead of focusing on sensation and perception, functionalism focused on mental testing, patterns of development, effectiveness of educational practices, Mental processes are ultimately private events since no one can see or tough another"s thoughts.
