Psychological Test: A standardized measure of a sample of a persons behaviour
- Used to measure individual differences that exist among people
- Response represents a sample of behaviour; which isn’t representative of one’s
characteristic behaviour
Mental Ability Tests:
- Most common kind of psychological test
1. Intelligence tests: measure general mental ability
- Intended to assess intellectual potential rather than previous learning
2. Aptitude test: assess specific types of mental abilities
- Differential Aptitude Tests assess verbal reasoning, numerical ability, etc.
3. Achievement Test: Gauge a person’s mastery and knowledge of various subjects
- Reading, English, or History Tests
Personality Tests: measure various aspects of personality, including motives, interests,
values, and attitudes. Also called scales
Standardization: uniform procedures used in administration and scoring of a test
- Same time allotted, same questions, instructions
Test Norms: provide information about where a score on a psychological test ranks in
relation to other scores on that test
- Determine what’s average (i.e. “you’re above average in creativity, etc.)
- Allows you to convert test results into a percentile
Percentile Score: % of people who score at or below the score one has obtained
Standardization Group: sample of people norms are based on
Canadian norms are based on WAIS –III
Reliability: measurement consistency of a test
Test-Retest Reliability: Comparing subjects’ scores on two administrations of a test
Correlation Coefficient: a numerical index of the degree of relationship between two
variables
Validity: ability of a test to measure what it was designed to measure
- Also used to refer to the accuracy of usefulness of the inferences or decisions based on a
test
Content Validity: degree to which the content of a test is representative of the domain it’s
supposed to cover
- Exam that covers nothing learned in class
Criterion-Related Validity: estimated by correlating subjects’ scores on a test with their
scores on an independent criterion (another measure) of the trait assessed by the test
Construct Validity: the extent to which there is evidence that a test measures a particular
hypothetical construct
- Measuring abstract qualities such as creativity
