Scientists can now selectively lesion tiny clusters of brain cells, leaving surrounding tissue unharmed. Scientists can electrically, chemically, magnetically stimulate art of the brain. Electroencephalogram (eeg): amplified recording of the waves of electrical activity that sweep across the brain"s surface, these waves are measured by electrodes placed on the scalp. Pet (positron emission tomography) scan: visual display of brain activity that detects where a radioactive form of glucose goes while the brain performs a given task. Brain areas most active when people feel pain/rejection, listen to angry voices, think about scary things, feel happy, become sexually excited. Brainstem: oldest part + central core of the brain, beginning where the spinal cord swells as it enters the skull, brainstem is responsible for automatic survival functions. Medulla: base of the brainstem, controls heartbeat + breathing. Just above medulla is pons, helps coordinate movements.
