Brain areas most active when people feel pain/rejection, listen to angry voices, think about scary things, feel happy, become sexually excited. Brainstem: oldest part + central core of the brain, beginning where the spinal cord swells as it enters the skull, brainstem is responsible for automatic survival functions. Medulla: base of the brainstem, controls heartbeat + breathing. Just above medulla is pons, helps coordinate movements.
