December 1879, wilhelm wundt, university of leipzig established first psychology laboratory. Used a machine to test time lag between hearing a sound and pressing a key. Psychology organized in 2 branches: structuralism + functionalism. Introspection: looking inward, immediate sensations, images, feelings from new experiences. Interested with why our mind/body does its functions. Assumed thinking or smelling developed because it was adaptive: consciousness allows us to consider past, adjust present + plan future. John b. watson/b. f skinner redefined psychology in 1920s. Behaviorists: observe people"s behavior as they respond to situations. Behaviorism: view that psychology should be: objective science that, studies behavior w/o reference to mental processes, most psychologists agree with 1, but not 2. Freudian psychology emphasized ways our unconscious/emotional responses to childhood experiences affect behavior. 1960s, humanistic psychologists carl rogers + abraham maslow found freudian/behaviorism too limiting. Humanistic psychology: perspective that emphasized growth/potential of healthy people. Second group of psychologists during 1960s, cognitive revolution.
