Prejudice: unjustifiable + usually negative attitude toward a group and its members. Prejudice generally involves stereotyped beliefs, negative feelings, and predisposition to discriminatory action. Stereotype: generalized (sometimes accurate but often overgeneralized) belief about a group of people. Discrimination: unjustifiable negative behavior toward a group + its members. Despite gender equality in intelligence scores, people tended to perceive their fathers as more intelligent than their mothers. People feel more positively about women than men. Just-world phenomenon: the tendency for people to believe the world is just + that people therefore get what they deserve + deserve what they get. Need to belong, live + love in groups. Through social identities we associate ourselves w/ certain groups + contrast ourselves w/ others. Ingroup: us people whom we share a common identity. Outgroup: them those perceived as different or apart from our in-group. Ingroup bias: tendency to favor our own group. Urge to distinguish enemies from friends predisposes prejudice against strangers.
