PSYC 2022 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Null Hypothesis, Statistical Hypothesis Testing, Test Statistic
Document Summary
Four steps of hypothesis test: step 1: state the hypothesis, h0 represents the null hypothesis. The null hypothesis states that the treatment doesn"t have any significant effect: h1 represents the alternative hypothesis. The alternative hypothesis shows that there is a treatment effect on the dependent variable: step 2: set the criteria for a decision, when we collect data, it eithers supports or rejects the null hypothesis. It is unlikely to happen if the null hypothesis is true. There would be only two outcome: either it locates in the critical region or it doesn"t. In a hypothesis test, there are two kind of errors that can be made: type 1 errors is where we reject the null hypothesis but it actually has no treatment effect. It is impossible to determine a single, exact probability of a type 2 error unlike type 1.
