Chapter 7 observational methods: watching and being with people. Observational technique: procedure using observation in some way that may or may not be part of an experiment. Observational design: study that is solely observational and does not include any experimentation (researcher chooses to observe naturally occurring behaviour and not experiment with it) Disclosure: informing people they are the subjects of the experiment (may or may not tell people they are being observed or studied) Observation that uses an explicitly defined coding framework for data recording. Coding: quantifying by giving similar observed instances of behaviour a symbol. Event coding (event sampling): recording pre-specified behavioural events as they occur (driven by the occurrence of events or changes of event) Interval coding: recording what behaviour is occurring or the typical behaviour in specified time intervals (driven by time observer records what happens during set time intervals)
