Document Summary

Chapter 5: a phenomenological theory: carl roger"s person-centered theory of personality. Believed that most of psychology was sterile and generally felt alienated from the field. The subjectivity of experience theory built on a deeply significant insight into the human condition. We are confident in our objective knowledge of an objective reality that we rarely question it. Because we need the approval of others, we tell ourselves that their desires and values are our own. Conflict between instinctive and rational elements of mind thus is not an immutable feature of the human condition in rogers"s view: rather than conflict, persons can experience congruence. They can realize a state in which their conscious experiences and goals are consistent with their inner, viscerally felt values. His clinical experiences convinced him that the core of our nature is essentially positive. Most fundamental motivation is toward positive growth. He recognized that people can, & often do, act in ways that are destructive/evil.
