PSYC 2120 Chapter Chapter 12: PSYC 2130 Chapter 12: The Behavioural Approach (Full Chapter) Prof. Frank Marchese
Document Summary
Classical conditioning: involves pairing a neural stimulus with a reflexive response that strengthens over time with the association of the pairing. Ivan pavlov accidently made this discovery when studying the digestive processes of dogs. He did so by placing powered meat on dog"s tongues to induce salivation. Later noticing that the dogs began salivated before receiving food (the association of salivation and expected food) Pavlov began studying classical conditioning through introspection trying to understand the animals perspective but this method was ineffective. Pavlov later banned introspection from his studies and moved into a more verifiable, objective approach. He concluded that these behaviors were not innate, but learned. He reasoned that this reflexive (salivation) response must be conditioned by experience with environmental events (the presence of food) He later experimented the effects of conditioned stimuli (light) that had not been previously paired with the unconditioned response (salivation) to understand if additional stimuli could be associated with the reflexive response.
