For a long time, people have suspected that the brain is important for the mind and behaviour. Realizing that the brain is important and figuring out how it functions are 2 different matters. You cannot easily open up a persons brain, especially while they are alive, and even then, all. Sometimes observing from the outside is all you can do you see is squishy, bloody tissue, the function of which is far from obvious. The problem may lie in the limitations of the available tools. For centuries people curious about the brains function were limited to studying people with brain damage or the bodies of the deceased. However, a dramatic revolution began with eeg machines, pet scanners, fmri magnets etc. that provide info about the activities of intact, living brains. Modern technology allows for close examination of the brains anatomy and its biochemistry.
