Document Summary
The concept of drive has typically assumed that the motivation of behaviour depends upon some physiological need such as huger. When a state exists the organism becomes motivated to reduce the need in whatever way it can. An organism becomes aware of a specific need state by specific stimuli, which direct the organism to search for appropriate objects to reduce the need. If there is no immediate response for resolving the situation, the motivation is channelled into a general increase in activity, which serves to bring the organism into contact with more and more objects that may satisfy. Responses leading to reduction of the need state or stimuli that accompany that state are learned and repeated whenever necessary: learning is seen as dependent upon the reduction of motivation. Drive coined by woodworth in 1918; the idea that forces within the individual activate behaviour freud. Freud was in many respects the first drive theorist.
