Document Summary

All mammals at birth start with same anatomy, both have sets of: Androgens: hormones more abundant in males, produced by testes. Causes more growth of testes, so more androgens etc, positive feedback lasts for early period of development. Cause wolfman ducts to develop into seminal vesicles + vas deferens. Testes produce mih (mullerian-inhibiting hormone), causes mullerian ducts to degenerate. Females do not have sry gene, gonads develop into ovaries, wolffian ducts degenerate. Steroid hormones: 4 carbon rings, are estrogen + androgen. 3 ways steroids work: bind to membrane receptors, exert rapid effects, enter cells + activate certain kinds of proteins in cytoplasm, bind to receptors that bind to chromosomes where they activate/inactivate certain genes. Not all biological differences are based on hormones, some on genes independently. Hormones injected now make almost no effect, hormones early on do. During first trimester, sex hormones determine whether body develops male/female genitals. Puberty also changes brain as well as rest of body.
