PSYC 3125 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Diminishing Returns, Gross Domestic Product, Neuroendocrinology
Document Summary
The association between disease and income is one of the strongest and most consistent correlations in population-health research. One exception to this rule are speci c diseases such as prostate, breast, and brain cancers, which seem to be more common in privileged societies. It is unclear whether the correlation is between income and health, or the things that high income has (education, better diet, improved housing, stable government) and health. Collinearity- several predictive variables are highly correlated with each other, making it dif cult to understand the relative contributions of each factor to the outcome. A country"s gross domestic product (gdp) per capita correlates strongly with life expectancies in poorer countries, but weakly in richer ones. Preston curve- a curvilinear relationship between income and life expectancy where each income increment in a rich country has less effect on health than the same increment of wealth in a poorer one.
