Schizophrenia: psychotic disorder where personal, social and occupational functioning deteriorate because of unusual perceptions, odd thoughts, disturbed emotions and motor abnormalities. 1/100 people suffer from schizophrenia and live 20 fewer years than other people. Appears in lower levels of socioeconomic groups. Symptoms, triggers, course and responsiveness to treatment vary greatly. Psychosis: a loss of contact with reality; people with schizophrenia experience psychosis. Positive symptoms: excesses of or bizarre additions to normal thoughts, emotions or behaviours. Delusions, disorganized thinking, heightened hallucinations and perceptions. Inappropriate affect: displays of emotions that are unsuited to the situation. Negative symptoms: deficits in normal thought, emotions or behaviours. Poverty of speech/alogia: decrease in speech content they think and say very little. Flat affect: show less to no anger, joy and other feelings. Avolition: feeling drained of energy/interest in normal goals. Social withdrawal: people may withdraw from their social environment. Catatonic stupor: stop responding to their environment and silent for a long time.
