PSYC 3170 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Lead Poisoning, Fire Retardant
Document Summary
School based programs are effective at increasing the amount of time children spend in physical activity and fitness, but are less successful in increasing the percentage of children who are active in leisure time. Parents should remind children of physical activity. Strategies to help people start and continue exercising: preassessment, excise selection, exercise conditions, goals, consequences, social influence, and record keeping. First, we can promote physical activity by giving rewards for increased exercised and for decreased sedentary behaviour. Second, physicians can increase physical activity in sedentary patients by giving verbal advice and written plans for specific behaviours and goals. Third, sedentary people who are willing to increase their activity are more likely to sick with an exercise routine that requires a high frequency than a high intensity. Fifth, people who are emotionally depressed are less likely than others to be physically active and regularly engaging in physical activity reduces the risk of becoming depressed.
