Positivity bias tendency, increasing over the lifespan, to recall more pleasant mem than wither neutral or negative. Susan charles, mara mather, carstensen memory biases are no accident: they asked younger and older ppl to view 32 scenes (pleasant, negative neutral, pics with emotional content were remembered better than were neutral. Age related emotional biases observed with words and faces p. 279-281 extreme emotional distress. Case of amn 23 yr old small fire; did not inhale smoke and left house. He did not know what his profession was or where he lived. He only had memories up to age 17. Fire was amns worst fear he had notmal psychological and physical development. Reduced metabolism was discovered in mem related areas. These findings suggest that extreme psychological distress may lead retrieval suppression to be engaged involuntarily in reaction to certain stimuli. Recovered mem of trauma: instances of motivated forgetting--p. 287-292. Person recovers a mem gradually in suggestive therapy.
